Marshall stared at the dashboard of the police carryall, thinking it needed to be dusted, when it occurred to him that he had no recollection of what preceded this thought. Had he simply nodded off, or had he had another episode? He looked around. It was dark outside. Raining. He was on a road flanked by dense forest. His clothes were soaking wet, and he had no idea where he was. Damn. Another episode.

Doing his best to focus, he tried to think of where he last remembered being. Going home? Yes. He’d been on his way home from work. But that was hours ago. And now he was parked on the shoulder of some rural road—maybe on the island, maybe not—soaked to the bone and freezing.

If this sort of thing continued, and if it was discovered by his staff, Marshall knew he’d be forced to take a medical leave of absence. That couldn’t happen. He had to stay in the fight. It was his only hope. He’d keep his condition hidden as long as he possibly could.
